Overall: I would never buy the A40s just on their own without the mixamp for full price ( I think its like 150US$ full price? ), but as a cheap pickup, you could have done worse.At ASTRO, we’re proud to offer fans a new eSports audio solution with our Tournament Ready (TR) products featuring the A40 TR Headset, MixAmp Pro TR, A40 TR Mod Kits. It is a set of headphones that is tuned for surround sound as well, and I don't think you get any of that unless you use the mixamp.

They wont beat super high end headphones, but I think they sound great! People say that my voice comes through super clearly as well ( but I am usually using the mixamp, and I would guess that there are better results with that, than straight through the PS4 controller ). But they are pretty great! I think you have to be a pretty big audiophile to really think the A40s are shitty ( I have been through multiple 500$+ pairs of headphones through the years from Sony, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic, etc. The sound quality on them isn't the best out of all headphones of all time of course. But now that you have the A40s, to me, it would make sense to keep an eye open for a cheap used mixamp on ebay or something. I am in temporary housing for my new job as I just moved, and have been using the A40s via the PS4 controller almost exclusively. You have limited software volume and voice mixing control ( Hold the PS button for 3 secs and you will see some settings ), but the voice and game audio wont sound quite a great as it does through the mixamp, and you will have to open that software menu everytime you want to mix game audio and voice volume, and the mixing options are somewhat limited there. With PS4, you can now just plug it right into the controller and be good to go. OR you need the breakout cable that breaks it out in to 1 3.5mm for mic and 1 3.5mm for stereo headphone ).

You can probably just plug it into your PC and be good to go ( although you need to either have a PC that takes a 3-ring stereo + mic 3.5mm plug. The mix amp is key, but without it, you are left with essentially a pretty good wired headset. I am sorry that some people have had build quality issues, but mine seem built like a tank and have been through HEAVY use for 5+ years and are still amazing ( maybe they make them more cheaply nowadays? I dunno ). One of my favorite parts about them is that they can work in some capacity just about anywhere ( PC / PS4 / XBONE / 3DS / Vita / Phone ).
they don't make them anymore ), for going on 5+ years and they have always worked like a champ. Have had the same A40s plus the wireless mixamp ( kinda the precursor to the A50s.
